Spiritual Fullness in Christ

"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority." Colossians 2:8-10 NIV

Popular Counterfeits of biblical Christianity

Discern Truth is a free resource for discerning churches, Christians and ministries who desire to understand and identify popular counterfeits of biblical Christianity. While spiritual deception has become widespread throughout the years, one overlooked area is inside the Christian church. New age spirituality, progressive Christianity and contemplative spirituality are three movements that have redefined and disguised themselves as biblical Christianity within the church today.

These movements seek to introduce practices, resources and beliefs that are antithetical to Scripture. Believers and non-believers are being deceived by these movements and their counterfeit paths to God. This is a wake up call to those who believe in biblical Christianity to not fall asleep in the faith and abandon the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is by grace alone, by faith alone, through Christ alone that we are saved. Join in unmasking spiritual deception in the Christian church.

1. NEW AGE SPIRITUALITY

New age spirituality is difficult to put in to a concise definition as beliefs, influences and practices spread far and wide. In addition, one following new age spirituality can pick and choose what beliefs, practices and modalities they want to incorporate and these selections can change over time. It is a constant path of spiritual seeking through experiences for the purpose of enlightenment and higher consciousness.

ABOUT DISCERN TRUTH

PURPOSE

To provide a non-denominational, Biblical resource for Christians, Churches and Ministries that desire to be aware of spiritual deception including: occult, spiritual, new age and deceptive “Christian” teachings, beliefs and practices that have been rapidly infiltrating the Christian Church. Our purpose is to bringing awareness regarding these topics which have become “acceptable” and passed off as “Christian” within the context of the Body of Christ, Churches and Ministries. Furthermore, DISCERN TRUTH endeavors to proclaim the Truth of the Gospel by Unmasking Deception in the Christian Church.

MISSION

To serve as a 'wake up call' to Christians, Churches and Ministries about the dangers of these teachings, beliefs and practices from the committee's thorough personal experience and extensive research on the topic of spiritual deception and it's impact on the Body of Christ.

The mission of DISCERN TRUTH is not to tell Christians what is right or wrong, neither to pit the body of Christ against itself and cause further division. The mission can be broken down in 3 points:

1. EVIDENCE: to present evidence for Christians, Churches and Ministries to research for themselves, and as a result, aid in helping these groups clearly define and differentiate through Scripture what they believe and why.

2. EXPLANATION: To provide explanation regarding deceptive teachings, beliefs and practices that are theologically and doctrinally contradictory to the Scriptures.

3. ENGAGEMENT: To encourage engagement through healthy dialogue with Christians, Churches and Ministries about the topic of spiritual deception.

DISCERN TRUTH STORY

DISCERN TRUTH was formed in 2019 by a small committee of women in the West Michigan area. Individually and collectively burdened by the topic of spiritual deception in the Christian Church, they felt moved by the Lord to address this often misunderstood and often dismissed topic. With much council, prayer and the help of one of the founding committee members, being a former new age and spiritual believer (now born again Christian), DISCERN TRUTH was formed. The heart behind this resource is one of humility and grace, not judgement or shame. The committee has a genuine desire to preserve the unity and integrity of the Christian Church however, refuses to compromise Biblical Truth in the name of acceptance and tolerance.

As a result, this resource has been created to encourage Christians, Churches and Ministries to address spiritual deception in a humble and Biblical centered way that include spiritually deceptive practices, beliefs and doctrines that threaten to undermine the simplicity and authority of the Gospel message. The committee is dedicated to exposing unnecessary methodologies, ideologies and un-Biblical theories and beliefs that do not compliment biblical Christianity (even if marketed as such), but in reality, tangent believers from the Truth and a personal relationship and identity found through Jesus Christ.

OUR BELIEFS

SCRIPTURE
Discern Truth believes: the Bible in it’s totality (Old and New testament) is God’s Word and is complete, sufficient and absolute authority in a believers life.

CREATION
DT believes: the account of creation found in the book of Genesis. That God (Father through His Son and Holy Spirit) created the heavens and earth, earth being void until God spoke creation in to being. We believe God created marriage to be between man (out of the dust of the earth) and woman (out of man). Both unique with equally important roles to be image bearers of God.

TRINITY
DT believes: in the trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons, one God. We believe the Holy Spirit was sent from Heaven after the Son’s ascension to Heaven (after His resurrection from the dead) as a helper for those who follow and believe in Jesus Christ.

JESUS CHRIST
DT believes: in Jesus Christ, the perfect and sinless son of God, messiah as prophesied throughout the Old Testament, fulfilled in the New Testament. We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus through Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We believe Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man and entered the world for the ultimate propitiation and sacrifice for mankind’s sins. Through His death, burial and resurrection, he fulfilled the prophecy found in Isaiah 59?

We believe in having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not relying on the faith of others. A personal relationship with Christ is about a relationship, not religion.

SATAN
We believe there is an enemy of our souls, Satan, a fallen angel who was cast out of Heaven along with a 1/3rd of the angels. We believe he was given dominion over the earth, as the “prince of the air.” We believe that believers wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and rulers unseen. We believe Satan has temporary permission to lie and deceive here on earth until Christ returns. We believe in Christ’s final victory over Satan and that the kingdom of light rules over the kingdom of darkness.

SIN
8. We believe mankind has a sinful and fallen nature that can be traced back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (book of Genesis). We believe the only solution to this fallen nature is to put one’s faith and trust in Jesus Christ, repent (turn) from sin and submit to the authority of Christ ruling over one’s life and be continually sanctified and transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit through God’s Word.

HEAVEN
9. We believe Heaven is for eternity and those that put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will be counted among the citizens of Heaven.
10. We believe there is only one way to the living God and to Heaven and that is by putting your faith in trust in God’s son, Jesus Christ.

HELL
12. We believe in hell the alternative of eternity in Heaven, the final place of judgement for those who do not put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

MINISTRY
11. We believe in worshiping the Lord through song, music and by the works of our hands (our professions and vocations). We don’t believe those in full time ministry are excluded from sharing the Gospel.

BAPTISM
13. We believe water baptism is an outward expression of faith and trust in Jesus Christ, though encouraged out of obedience of our faith, not a requirement for Salvation.

PRAYER
14. We believe in the power of prayer and that we have a high priest in Heaven (Jesus Christ) who intercedes on our behalf. We believe Mark ? how Jesus’ instructs his disciples to pray is sufficient, no special means or disciplines of prayer are necessary. We believe God already knows what we need and all we need to do is ask. We are to take our worries and anxieties to Him through prayer and thanksgiving, so that the Prince of Peace (Jesus Christ) would rule in our hearts as we trust Him to work all things out in His way and His timing.

ANGELS
15. We believe there are angels,
God’s angels and Satan’s fallen angels. God’s angels are His messengers and have very specific roles and assignments given by the Lord. Some care for, comfort and protect God’s children, others carry out God’s judgement. We believe Satan’s fallen angels masquerade as angels of light to tempt, deceive and lure individuals in to sin and away from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We don’t believe in the worship of angels, they are created beings who ?

MIRACLES
16. We believe God still heals today and performs miracles, but also believe it is not always God’s will to heal on earth, sometimes the miracle is completed in Heaven.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES
17. We believe in the Biblical interpretation of speaking in tongues (the tongue must be an actual language and one with the gift of interpretation must be present to interrupt the message when being used in Church). We believe the gift of tongues is one of may spiritual gifts and not all are blessed to receive it. We believe that the gifts of the spirit are unique but equally important, no gift is superior to another.

SIGNS & WONDERS
18. We don’t believe in and heavily caution the pursuit of the supernatural or manifestations of the Holy Spirit through practices, beliefs and techniques contrary to Scripture. We don’t believe that spiritual gifts can be learned or taught by man, they are gifts, bestowed by God to those He intends.

ARMOR OF GOD
19. We believe that as believers we are called daily to fight the good fight. We encourage believers to put (pray) on the full armor of God, helmet of Salvation, breastplate of righteousness, belt of truth, sword of the spirit, the shoes of peace and the shield of faith and use the recitation of memorized Scripture to thwart the attacks of the enemy.

20. We believe God is the One who binds Satan, not us. To command, declare or decree an outcome places God’s authority in our hands and not His. We believe in praying and rebuking Satan in Jesus’ name, using Jesus’ authority over darkness. It is in Jesus’ name and authority that God’s will is carried out. We do not believe our mere human commands or intentions release divine and authoritative power over the deceitful works of the enemy.

SALVATION
21. We believe that the gift of Salvation is a free gift. We believe it is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone in God’s son (Jesus Christ) that we are saved. It is not by works, or by meeting a certain list, criteria or through repetitive, man made rituals or wisdom that we are made right with God. We believe in the simplicity of the Gospel message.

KINGDOM OF GOD
22. We believe the earth is temporary, that all of creation is groaning for Christ’s return and rule.

CHRIST'S SECOND COMING
23. We believe that Christ will return to rule for eternity with Him a new heaven and a new earth.

GATEWAYS

"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 'I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.'" Jeremiah 17:9-10 NIV

GATEWAYS TO SPIRITUAL DECEPTION

The following is by no means a comprehensive list, but features some of the most prominent ways and the reasons that lead to spiritual deception. Unknowingly, these gateways have the potential to slowly and subtly draw Christians to spirituality (new age), practices and beliefs that will ultimately hinder a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

At their core, each of these gateways represent a desire for CONTROL in the believers life. When our lives and circumstances seem out of control, it is natural for us as humans to seek a form of stability. Unfortunately, in our humanness, the tendency to do this through our own strength is not only a defense mechanism for self-protection but also one subtle way we can stop trusting that the Lord is in control of every aspect of our lives and "...God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" - NASB.

1. ACCEPTANCE
In a modern world ever changing to embrace and accept everyone "just as they are" with no standard of conscience or morality, the believer is pushed towards having to make decisions that either highlights or undermines their faith. Rather than risking personal or professional reputation, neutrality has become a leading option. Acceptance in the name of love is a stark contrast to loving because Christ first loved us. To walk out the latter takes endurance, strength, courage and dedication, reliant on the Lord to provide us these gifts. Standing up for Jesus is not easy and the more modernly accepting one becomes, the higher likelihood of accepting of alternative views of faith, spirituality and interpretations of God and His Word can become the norm instead of the rare exception. Let us as believers come before the Lord and humbly ask Him to strengthen our faith and through the power of the Holy Spirit find our confidence and boldness to express our faith on a daily basis.
Reference passage: 1 Peter 4:12-16

2. EMOTION & FEELINGS
In our modern day world, one doesn't have to look hard around them to see that our society at large centers around the phrase, "follow your heart" in many different iterations and fashions. While as believers it is within our human nature to experience and express emotions and feelings, the spirituality and new age world encourages it's followers to take emotions as guide and feelings as fact. Instead of surrendering our emotions, desires and feelings to the Lord, especially if one has experienced pain or hurt in the context of a "religious" setting, following our emotions and feelings as truth becomes a much more compelling driving force behind "faith" and interrupting spirituality through the lens of our own hearts. Let us as believers surrender our emotions and feelings to the Lord through prayer and His Word and ask Him to give us a new heart and to transform our fleshy desires into a worthy sacrifice so as to become dependent on Him for direction and Truth.
Reference passage: 1 Peter 4:12-16

3. FAITH IS OBSOLETE
Today, individuals are looking to connect and hear from God in a direct and personal way beyond prayer, the Scriptures and through the encouragement of the Body of Christ. The longing in our modern world for a deeper and tangible, 5 sensory spiritual experiences is more sought after than the Truth that can be found in God's Word. Seeking significance and purpose through these spiritual experiences is a direct result of not knowing why they believe what they’ve believed in the past any longer. As a result, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the Bible is no longer sufficient. Individuals go on a path of seeking to discover God through supernatural experiences, mindfulness, practices, books, programs marketed to improve their walk with Christ. Meanwhile reading the Bible in its entirety falls to the wayside and new beliefs are accepted as “Christian” with small references to Scripture with verses and passages completely taken out of context.

4. FINANCIAL HARDSHIP
Financial difficulty and hardship is a very real topic of concern in every area of the world population. According to a recent study completed by Ramsey Solutions, titled: Money Ruining Marriages in America, disagreements about finances ranked #2 behind #1 (infidelity) as the leading cause of divorce. There are no "get rich" plans or short cuts to be financially healthy. Unfortunately, there are other voices in the "Christian" markets and undefined spirituality that would proclaim otherwise. The enemy and his lies often play off of our vulnerabilities and weaknesses, in this case financial hardship. No amount of doing this or that, formulaic "sow" and "reap" tactics or visualize and manifest things in to your reality comes from the Lord. The Lord is the giver and taker, only He determines who and how he will bless those who follow Him. To seek after financial fulfillment through and for our own selfish desires is contrary to what the Scriptures teach. While some may prosper in their own strength, money is their god. Let us as believers seek to please the Lord through our obedience to Him and look to Him to fulfill not only our spiritual but financial needs. Let us also then earnestly seek the Lord through prayer, asking Him to direct our steps to become more financially accountable for what He has entrusted us with and also come before Him boldly in our times of financial need.

5. GRIEF
Grief comes in a variety of forms and fashions. It's adjoining counterparts are: discouragement and disappointment.
Lastly, the enemy preys on discouragement, disillusion and disappoint in a believers life and provides alternative ways for “faith,” “healing,” and a “better life” full of “peace” but never delivers but continues to deceive and keep nonbelievers and believers from the Truth. “

6. HIDDEN WISDOM
We see in the very first book of the Bible, the enemy promising hidden knowledge to Eve and subsequently Adam should they only eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. While this sounded incredibly appealing, there is little difference in the false promise that the world of spirituality and new age brings. Today, the spirituality and new age movement appears loving and helpful, innocent at best. But underneath the lie, undefined spirituality soaked in new age ideologies and methodologies cover a complex, multi-layered and broad range of belief systems and practices defined in the Bible including: divination, sorcery, magic, spells, mediumship, etc. On a defining note, a self-labeled spiritual (new age) believer or Christian dabbling in these practices would in most cases never identify as one who practices new age. However, those in spirituality and various forms of new age enthusiasts take their beliefs just as seriously as a born again believer takes their beliefs.

7. POOR HEALTH
The chronically ill seek out remedies and therapies through holistic medicine, not necessarily all detrimental to the believers walk but as the potential to take our eyes of the Great Physician. Holistic medicine can be a gateway and slow and slippery slope in to experiencing many different forms of energy healing and other "therapeutic" modalities (not based in science and not from the Lord) that provide temporary benefit and as a result, the individual becomes dependent on a specific expert, guru or healer for the source of their spiritual, mental and physical well-being. The downfall of not taking all things back to Scripture and to the Lord in prayer is that more practices within the holistic health world become acceptable to the individual.

5. SELF HELP
The self help and self improvement movement has been around for decades, re-purposed and repackaged in different forms, some using and abusing the Christian faith in effort to appeal to a larger audience. While there are various teachings that can be beneficial towards believers in learning more about themselves and how to improve sinful patterns and areas of their lives, the self-help and self-motivational world can quickly become a god that replaces the necessity of the True, Living God Who is capable of transforming us from the inside out. Whatever various means and forms we are impacted to self-improve, be it podcasts, conferences, motivational speakers, teachings, books, television series, teachers, etc, not one of them should come first in a believers life above a transforming relationship with Jesus Christ through the help of the Holy Spirit and the power of His Word.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I talk to my friend or family member about things he/she is involved in, I am not sure how to attempt a conversation?

Conversations about spiritual deception are never one and done. They may be over the course of years, slow and steady truly wins the race, not fast and confrontational.Asking questions is the best approach. Get the other party to talk about why they believe what they believe, assure them you’d like to understand where they are coming from and what led them to believe and practice what they do today.Individuals who are deceived will obviously not realize it. They take their beliefs just as seriously as you do your Christian faith. So to belittle or undermine what they believe because it seems outlandish or silly to you won’t go very far.Get to know them. Take an interest in the individual, their hopes, their dreams, their family, event their dog or cat. You can build a relationship and not focus on faith in every conversation, keep things lighthearted and respectful. You want the individual to look forward to connecting not be anxious or uncomfortable to talk with you.Ask faith related questions, don’t spill what you believe. As the relationship progresses, take time to ask the individual what their view are about Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit and the Bible. Knowing more information on what they believe about these topics will give you more knowledge about how to approach each topic.Don’t over share. If asked what you believe, don’t go in to a full out theological explanation. Most people caught up in spiritual deception, especially new age spirituality believe in the concept of god/divine living within you, therefore you are divine. It’s a subtle but great hinge point in understanding the distinct differences of new age spirituality and Biblical Christianity. If the person believes they are divine, there is little chance that they believe they are in need of a Savior to save them. They may believe in Jesus. The majority of those in spiritual deception would say they believe in Jesus. However, the extent of their belief may only encompass their acknowledgement of His human existence historically and what he seemed to represent (love). Often those in new age spirituality will say Jesus was a great teacher and prophet who attained enlightenment (Christ consciousness) and he was a model for us to do the same. The distinct difference is that they leave the purpose of the cross out of the equation, there is no need for it. On the contrary, Jesus was killed for His radical beliefs, not because He was the perfect sacrifice to cover our sins and through trust in Him our promise to eternal life. It’s very important to understand the distinct viewpoints and beliefs about Jesus others may have. For addressing further topics, continue to ask questions. To begin the discussion on sin, ask whether or not the individual believes in being moral and from where they draw their beliefs or standards of morality. Most of those in spiritual deception do not believe in the concept of sin, however, the ego which is the supposed shadow self/negative character qualities of oneself that one must work lifetimes to shed… perhaps many lifetimes (re-incarnation) will be something they can relate to and understand. Ask the question, how do they know what’s right and wrong and where they find their reasoning for each. Find commonalities in beliefs but describe how they are distinct. If the individual is communicating a “works based theology,” such as the work of shedding the ego/negative character qualities, then you could interject and speak about how Jesus has paid the price through His death on the cross for our inadequacies, our human faults, our mistakes, regrets, in other words, sin. See how they receive this information before proceeding to other topics.Thoughts on Heaven and hell. At this juncture one can assume the other party might be thinking about sin and the concept of hell. The majority of those deceived won’t believe in hell or that even if there was a loving, benevolent god (creator, source, universe), why would he/she banish or send people to hell. Furthermore, if they believe we are all divine, why wouldn’t we all go back to whence we came? To heaven, “home” as some like to call it, with emphasis on this place embracing all with unconditional love.Start at the beginning. At this juncture, reviewing the book of Genesis may be helpful, often there is an assumption that everyone believes a similar creation story, but that is usually not the case. The individual may have never heard of the creation of earth and that in it from a Biblical perspective. There are varying beliefs on the origin of the world (often called gaia) in new age spirituality, some may be proponents of the Big Bang, others through the teachings of their respected gurus Keep the simplicity of the Gospel through your testimony. Most cases when you go to purchase an item, especially online, you look through the reviews to see what other people have to say about it, right? The same should be true for Christianity. The power of our own testimonies is so much more effective than 100 resources. People want to know if things are authentic and genuine, our faith should be no different. If we’re not sharing how Jesus Christ has transformed our lives, how do we expect others to believe in Him? It’s the power of our “review” and testimony that is an effective tool for reaching others for the Kingdom.Know the real threat to spiritual breakthrough. You have to understand that discussing any of these topics can be life shattering for some. These are deep held beliefs some people have had for years or decades. The enemy does not want them to understand God’s Truth or know Jesus Christ in a personal way.Decide ahead time you don’t know all the answers. If you don’t know the answer to a question, just be honest and tell the other party you don’t know. However, inform them you will find out and get back to them.Relinquish control. Ultimately it’s not your job to save them, Jesus is the One who saves. You may just be a seed planter and sometimes that’s all you are! Often we are not the ones to water the seed, to nurture and fertilize the seed. Sometimes, it takes multiple individuals or encounters over years for that seed to take root and bear fruit. Don’t be discouraged. The enemy would like nothing more to discourage you and your efforts for Christ. If an ongoing conversation or relationship comes to and end, sometimes, we have to trust that the Lord can take care of them and send others in their path. Never stop praying, the Lord works in mysterious ways to bring those lost back to Him.
2. I don't fully understand what my friend or family member believes, how can I understand where they are coming from and how our beliefs differ without putting them on the defense?

Reviewing the suggestions under question one will be beneficial as well. This is not a battle against the person, it’s a battle against the enemy. Whatever you do, don’t go in to a conversation with your friend or family member on the attack. There is a way to have healthy conversation that does not put the other party on the defense. Continual prayer is of great importance. Asking the Lord to give you the words to speak, the questions to ask, for the Holy Spirit to move in the other party’s heart. Ask the Lord to reveal truth to the individual, that the words spoken would penetrate deaf ears, hard hearts and that their eyes would be opened to recognize the kingdom of darkness verses the kingdom of light.Patience is KEY. Don’t throw a Bible at the other party or quote Scripture at them. If opportunity arises in the midst of multiple conversations that topics surrounding the Bible and Scripture come up, approach this gently, humbly and with compassion. Offer to read a chapter or passage together that might relate to something their going through and discuss if desired. Offer to pray with the individual if the opportunity presents itself.Emphasize that you value them as an individual and you enjoy their friendship. Don’t use their past over them as a way to “convict” them into “seeing the light.” Take things slow and remember to focus on asking general questions, not accusing them of being wrong right off the bat and as time goes on, ask if you can be more honest with them about the direction their beliefs are taking them. Don’t force if they say no, but leave the door open for future communication if possible.
3. I’ve often felt something is ‘off’ with a practice, belief or something I’ve been introduced to, can you help me understand why?

Congratulations, that is the purpose of the Holy Spirit working within you, it’s called discernment. “Warning, warning, iceberg ahead!”Now not all uneasiness or suspect fears turn out to be valid, learned this myself. However, you can always RESEARCH (all you need is a computer and an internet connection) and you can discover for yourself.

UNMASKING SPIRITUAL DECEPTION 101

1. Just because someone uses the term God or says they believe in God does not mean they believe in the God of the Bible.

What is New Age Spirituality?

Key definitions:
GOD: God is often synonymous with terms such as: universe, source, creator, love, universal energy, the divinity within us all etc. To those in new age spirituality, these terms mean the same thing, however, their definition of god is not the living God of the Scriptures.

2. JESUS: many who follow new age spirituality say they believe in Jesus and even pray to Him. However, their understanding of Jesus is limited to the theory that he is an ascended master, a great man, even a prophet, however, not the only son of God. Sin is not a concept in new age spirituality, so there is no need for a Savior or Salvation. You save yourself through your means of attaining enlightenment.

GOAL: examining beliefs by their original, application origins and influences.

BUZZ WORDS: Chakras, energy, good vibes, positive thoughts, love and light, .

An old king lost his charioteer and let it be known that he wanted another. Four men presented themselves as candidates for the place. He said to the first one, “Tell me, sir how near with safety can you drive my chariot to the edge of that precipice near by the castle?” “Sire,” he replied, “I can drive you within 1 foot of the edge of the precipice at full speed and not endanger your life.” “What can you do” said the king to the next applicant. “Why” he said, “O can drive you within a hair’s breadth of the edge and carry you safely by with the horses at a gallop.” “What can you do?” he said to the third man, “Why, sire,” said he, “I can drive your chariot so close to the edge of that dangerous precipice that one-half of the tire will be on solid stone and one-half extending over the precipice, and yet carry you safely by.” The king said to the fourth man, “What do you say for yourself?” “Sire,” said the fourth man, “If your majesty directed me to drive you by that precipice, from which if you should happen to fall you would go to certain death. I would drive your chariot just as far away from the edge of that dangerous cliff as the road would permit me to go.” “You are the man I want for my charioteer,” said the king. And so our young men should keep as far away from liquor as possible, and we should keep the saloon and liquor as far away from the boy as possible.
